Albert Riera is heading for Anfield in a £10million deal that will spell further frustration for Everton and all but end Gareth Barry’s hopes of joining Liverpool.
Riera set to turn Red: Espanyol winger Albert Riera has become Rafael Benitez's midfield transfer target
The Espanyol winger may only have been Option B for providing balance on the left of
midfield, but Rafa Benitez was still hailing the transfer breakthrough as the final part of his masterplan for taking on all comers in the Barclays Premier League and Champions League.
Liverpool have been crying out for a left-sided specialist to add width to an otherwise one-dimensional approach, and Riera’s imminent arrival finally completes the jigsaw,
even if £18million-rated Aston Villa midfielder Barry was originally marked down as Benitez’s prime target for the role.
After celebrating seeing off neighbours Everton in the race to sign Riera, though, the Liverpool manager was forced to confront the dreaded prospect of having to settle for an unpleasant Option B in Europe, as he prepared for the Champions League showdown with Standard Liege at Anfield.
